Case Study: General Electric (GE) – Big Data and Analytics

Founded in New Jersey USA in 1878, General Electric (GE) has grown to become a multinational conglomerate based around four themes:

    1. Building – which includes providing capital, expertise and infrastructure on a global scale. GE also builds appliances, lighting, power systems and other products for both domestic and business applications.
    2. Curing – includes providing medical technologies and services to medical clinics and hospitals. These medical technologies include CT, MRI, Digital Mammography, PET/CT, Ultrasound and patient monitoring devices.
    3. Moving – this includes manufacturing jet engines and rail locomotives. GE also build navigational and other transport safety and productivity systems.
    4. Powering – this involves the production of mining and LNG extraction technologies. GE are also involved in developing and producing nuclear and wind turbine technologies.

One of GE’s latest projects is an ‘Industrial Internet’ which is the convergence of industrial machines, data and the Internet. The potential is to provide connectivity for all product applications throughout its four themes and includes real-time monitoring and analytics on what can be very remote systems such as pipelines and power generation equipment. This very dynamic company require enterprise systems and data integration that can adapt and not only remain effective in the harshest of conditions but also operate in the most secure and data sensitive environments such as hospitals.

Assignment Task

Assume you are a member of the GE Enterprise Information Architecture team, and asked to research an information centric solution to achieve their dynamic ‘Industrial Internet’ as described in the case study. Starting with your knowledge of Enterprise Information Architecture Reference Architecture, report on how GE could integrate and manage its many disparate information systems and data feeds into a unified Industrial Internet’.

Your target audience is executive business people, who have extensive business experience but limited computing knowledge.

Unfortunately, you have to complete this task in a short period (< 5 weeks), without any direct information source from the business body. The design you provide will mainly depend on your experience, understanding, and vision for the information system.

However, you are free to design and include any functional and non-functional components that you feel important in GE’s case. Keep in mind that there are no correct or wrong answers in the design as long as they are reasonably explained.

Report Format

Your report should be no less than 2,000 words and it would be best to be no longer than 3,000 words.

The report MUST be formatted using the following guidelines:

  • Paragraph text – 12 point Calibri single line spacing
  • Headings – Arial in an appropriate type size
  • Margins – 2.5cm on all margins
  • Header – Report title
  • Footer – page number (including the word “Page”)
  • Page numbering – roman numerals (i, ii, iii, iv) up to and including the Table of Contents, restart numbering using conventional numerals (1, 2, 3, 4) from the first page after the Table of Contents.
  • Title Page – Must not contain headers or footers. Include your name as the report’s author.
  • The report is to be created as a single Microsoft Word document (version 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, or Office 365). No other format is acceptable and doing so will result in the deduction of marks.

Referencing

The report is to include (at least 5) appropriate references and these references should follow the Harvard method of referencing. Note that ALL references should be from journal articles, conference papers, technical papers or a recognized expert in the field. DO NOT use Wikipedia as a reference. The use of unqualified references will result in the deduction of marks.

Submission

The completed assignment is to be submitted to Blackboard Task 1 by the due date of 11:59pm
Friday of Week 5 in early January 2018.

The assignment will be assessed according to the marking sheet. Late submission will be penalised according to the policy in the course outline. Please note Saturday and Sunday are included in the count of days late.

Assignment Return and Release of Grades

Assignment grades will be available on the blackboard in two weeks after the submission. An electronic assignment marking sheet will be available at this time.

Where an assignment is undergoing investigation for alleged plagiarism or collusion the grade for the assignment and the assignment will be withheld until the investigation has concluded.
