Case Study
Senior student – St. Helena Hospital
You are a senior student working on a placement in an elderly general ward at St.
Helena Hospital. Many patients have been admitted to the ward that you are working on
with a variety of medical issues. These issues include: cardio vascular accidents
(strokes), patients who have had asthma attacks, hypo and hyper glycaemic attacks,
heart attacks and those who have been admitted with urinary tract infections. Part of
your role involves working with the staff and the ward manager with regards to each
patient’s individual treatment and subsequent planning for discharge once they have
received the required medical treatment and their conditions have stabilised.
Each set of conditions present different problems. The expert advice and input from
different healthcare professionals is required for each patient from admission to
discharge. The patients that you have encountered have had a variety of conditions
that required hospital treatment and the input from different healthcare
professionals. These healthcare professionals include: medical doctors and consultants,
radiologists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, specialist diabetic
and respiratory nurses, dieticians, hospital transport, support agencies such as help the
aged and social workers to name but a few of those professionals that are involved in
patient care.
